BAGUIO CITY – To cap the month-long celebration of National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM) and Organic Agriculture Month (OAM), the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) hosted a friendly cook-off contest on November 29, 2024 to celebrate sustainable agriculture, food security, and gender equality through fun and educational activities that engaged both participants and the viewers.
These two significant observances underscore the importance of supporting local rice production and promoting the benefits of organic farming for health and the environment. By integrating these themes, DA-CAR aims to advance a holistic approach to agriculture that values traditional practices, modern innovations, and the inclusive participation of men and women.
Representatives from various government agencies, including the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Agricultural Training Institute, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and the Baguio City Police Office, participated in the event. Each team comprised five members who competed in activities such as the rice race, winnowing and pounding rice, and preparing three dishes: a fish-based viand, a vegetable dish, and rice from the grains they processed.
During the awarding ceremony, DA-CAR Regional Executive Director Atty. Jennilyn M. Dawayan emphasized the importance of collaboration among government agencies to promote responsible rice consumption and the patronage of local organic produce.
“The Philippines faces challenges in rice production. One of the contributions we aim for is minimizing post-production losses, which we are often part of, even at home or in our offices,” she said. She also encouraged agencies to connect with farmer cooperatives and associations for their rice needs, highlighting the availability of high-quality local rice in provinces such as Apayao, Kalinga and other provinces.
The cook-off showcased creativity, skill, and teamwork, with dishes judged on factors such as the weight of hauled panicles, quality of the pounded rice, uniqueness of the recipe, overall presentation, taste, and preparation time.
The BFAR team emerged as the champion, taking home a cash prize of ₱15,000. The BJMP team secured second place with ₱12,000, followed by the DTI team in third place with ₱10,000. The BPI team landed fourth, receiving ₱7,000. All other participating teams were awarded ₱3,000 each, while the DPWH team earned the Director’s Choice Award, along with ₱5,000.
This year’s NRAM and OAM activities were designed to engage the community, raise awareness, and inspire action towards more sustainable and health-conscious agricultural practices, ensuring the continued advancement of the region’s agricultural sector. By Leny D. Mendoza
