BAGUIO CITY – Following the conclusion of the #BROWN4good Challenge, a social media info campaign with the consumers of rice in the Cordillera, the Department of Agriculture (DA) officially concluded the activity recently with the turnover of 4,800 kilograms of unpolished heirloom rice as donation to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). In turn, DWSD will serve the rice to charities in the region.
The charities identified by the DSWD are Regional Study and Resource Center for Children, Regional Rehabilitation for Youth, Regional Haven for Women, and Shontoug Foundation Inc. The rice can supply the charities up to five to months.
DSWD Assistant Director Francis Khayad commended and expressed his earnest appreciation and gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries to the agriculture department. He said that the beneficiaries will benefit more as heirloom rice is deemed to be more nutritious than regular rice.
DA Executive Director Lorenzo Caranguian said that the donation is a way helping the less fortunate and also promoting the benefits of brown heirloom rice to both consumers and farmers.
Other than the brown rice which was donated to charities, the other goodnesss brought by the challenge are goodness to the body with more health benefits, farmers as they are helped to become entrepreneurs and raise their incomes; and, country because of the less ten percent milling process.
The challenge was launched last August 28 and ended December 5.
