TABUK CITY, Kalinga – To aid students and learners in acquiring school supplies while protecting the environment, the Dagupan Centro barangay will shortly begin the “Palit Plastic Bottles For School Supplies” project for the upcoming school year 2024-2025.
Kagawad Julius Breynn Deleña, Chair of the Committee on Solid Waste Management, Agriculture, Environment, and Beautification, explains that the project was implemented in 2019 but was halted due to the pandemic.
It has now been restarted to assist students, particularly those with limited resources, with their education without the need to purchase educational supplies. At the same time, by supplying students/learners with resources, their barangay benefits from cleaner roadways.
“This is also in support to the clean-and-green project iti barangay. Nu ma-eliminate tayu dagitoy agkaka-iwara nga bottles idiay streets tayu or ipapa-igid tayu lang idiay bal-balay tayu nga haan mapakinabangan, alaen tayun ta datayu mang-dispose kadagita. At the same time, makatulung tayu pay education program ti Dagupan Centro,” he underscored.
Deleña stated that the barangay had previously purchased items for distribution, but private individuals, businesses, and other groups also provided school supplies to accommodate additional people.
To participate in the initiative, the barangay councilman stated that they should only bring ANY empty plastic bottles to the Barangay Hall to be weighed, after which they can choose any educational supplies they want from notebooks, papers, crayons, pencils, sharpeners, ballpoint pens, and pencils.
He did, however, mention that there will be a limit to what people can take. Deleña stated that the barangay government prioritizes Dagupan Centro residents, but also accepts plastic bottles from people of neighboring barangays.
The kagawad also stated that all collected plastic bottles will be sold to recycling centers, with the proceeds going toward the barangay’s future projects.
Finally, Deleña stated that the project may start in the third week of July and will last throughout the school year. By Edward Joseph Gacuya
