BAGUIO CITY – The Baguio City Local Civil Registry Office reported a 4.20 percent increase in the number of deaths in the city last year compared to the recorded deaths during the previous year.
Assistant City Local Civil Registrar Allan Abayao said that there was an increase of 124 or 4.20 percent registered deaths in the city from 2,955 in 2023 to 3,079 last year.
He noted that the 60 and above age group has the highest mortality of 1,808 or 58.72 percent of the total registered deaths in the city last year.
Among the leading causes of mortality among the elderly in the city include cardiovascular diseases, pneumonia, among others.
He asserted that civil registration plays a significant role in establishing anybody’s legal identity and the vital events in one’s lifetime like birth, marriage, death, including any changes in the same such as change of first name, legitimation, paternal acknowledgement, adoption, annulment or marriage and divorce.
Abayao emphasized that the aforesaid comments are continuous, permanent and mandatory legal instruments that are practically needed for one’s admission to a school, availment of scholarships or grants, employment, health and social services, securing a passport, settling legitimacy, and also important in demographic research among others.
According to him, to ensure a timely and accurate registration of the said vital events, the month of February of every year was declared as Civil Registration Month in the Philippines pursuant to Proclamation No. 689 issued on January 28, 1991.
The local government, through the Local Civil Registry Office, in coordination with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), will be conducting various programs in celebration of the Civil Registration Month. By Dexter A. See
