SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The Department of Education (DepEd) in Region 1 is prepared for the phased rollout of the MATATAG Curriculum starting school year (SY) 2024-2025.
DepEd-Region 1 Assistant Regional Director Rhoda Razon said the MATATAG curriculum is the new brand of the education department anchored in the K to 12 curriculum which was piloted in 2023.
This revised curriculum addresses challenges faced by the current K to 12 curriculum, including numerous contents, misplaced prerequisite learning competencies, social inequities, and imbalances in thinking demands.
It has four components: the MA or making the curriculum relevant to produce job-ready, active, and responsible citizens; TA or taking steps to accelerate delivery of basic education facilities and services; TA or taking good care of learners by promoting learners’ well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment; and G or give support to teacher to teach better.
It will be implemented across all schools nationwide for SY 2024 – 2025 and the first phase includes Kindergarten, Grades 1, 4, and 7
“In La Union, the pilot implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum during the 2023-2024 school year at five previously selected schools proved successful,” said Razon during a recent episode of the DepEd Kumustahan sa Rehiyon Uno.
She added, “With this curriculum shift, our 14 school divisions have already hosted a series of orientations and trainings on the regional, provincial, and school-based levels.”
Razon noted that the 11,000 competencies in the previous curriculum will be reduced to 3,000 in the new framework, also decongesting some of the subjects.
On the other hand, Vivien De Guzman, education program supervisor of DepEd-Region 1, cited as an example that in Grade 1, learners will only take five subjects from the seven subjects from the last curriculum.
“The focus of our learners will be more on Language, Reading and Literacy, Mathematics, Makabansa, and Good Manners and Right Conduct,” she said.
Also, she noted that the mother tongue will no longer be a subject but a medium of instruction for learners to better comprehend the discussions.
The next phase will be rolled out for SY 2025 – 2026 and will cover Grades 2, 5, and 8. (PIA Region 1)
