BAGUIO CITY — In response to the rising cases of dengue across the country, the Department of the Interior and Local Government-Cordillera Administrative Region (DILG-CAR) has called on all local government units (LGUs) in the region to strengthen and intensify their dengue prevention and control efforts.
The Department of Health-Cordillera Administrative Region (DOH-CAR) has reported 740 dengue cases, resulting in two deaths as of February 15, 2025, highlighting the need for immediate action.
DILG-CAR Regional Director Araceli A. San Jose emphasized the importance of proactive measures at the local level to curb the spread of dengue. “We urge all local chief executives to actively mobilize their local health workers, volunteers, and communities to conduct clean-up drives, search-and-destroy operations, and maintain proper drainage systems,” she said.
The DILG-CAR chief also encouraged LGUs, especially barangays, to conduct search-and-destroy activities aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding sites, such as stagnant water in containers, tires, and other debris. LGUs are also advised to clear canals and properly manage drainage systems to prevent water stagnation.
Furthermore, the DILG reiterated the LGUs’ compliance with the Department’s Memorandum Circulars (MCs), such as MC No. 2019-176, which provides guidelines for the conduct of “Sabayang 4-O’Clock Habit para Deng-Get Out,” and MC No. 2012-016, which promotes the “Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD)” program. These policies emphasize the importance of daily community clean-up drives at the barangay level.
Additionally, DILG-CAR urged LGUs to utilize Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities to raise awareness about dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases. Barangay officials are encouraged to take the lead in educating their communities about the dangers of dengue and the necessary preventive measures.
RD San Jose added that LGUs must ensure the availability of facilities and equipment for controlling vector-borne diseases. “We must allocate adequate resources for dengue control activities, including the procurement of insecticides, larvicides, and other necessary equipment”, she explained.
To date, DILG-CAR has strengthened its monitoring efforts through its Field Operating Units (FOUs) to ensure the LGUs’ compliance with the Department’s anti-dengue policies and programs. By Fernando Pre
