BAGUIO CITY – Dr. Geohna Perez-Gison of Baguio General Hospital Medical Center Geriatric Care Unit talked about promoting health care for the elderly or Geriatric Care during the health media conference of Kapihan sa Baguio last Wednesday at the RTC Hall, DOH-Building.
Perez-Gison discussed the Geriatric Syndromes which are common conditions for the elderly like Dementia, Sleep Disorders, and Depression. She emphasized that the population of senior citizens are growing and prioritizing their health is very crucial at their age. Perez-Gison then
suggested the different Resistance Training Exercises and Balance Training Exercises that will help patients experiencing the conditions mentioned.
“Always engage in mentally-stimulating activities”
Prior to the list of suggestions, she said that most probably the cause of these symptoms are due to lack of physical activity which affects their overall well-being especially mentally as cognitive impairment builds up without proper physical and mental exercise.
She then promotes the campaign “Healthy Pilipinas” of the Department of Health and U.S. Agency for International Development where tips and information on health are encouraged such as healthy diet, exercises, and environmental health.
When asked about the current conditions of Baguio residents’ senior citizens,
“Yung senior citizens [dito] sa Baguio are more blessed and healthy,” Perez-Gison said.
