BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) thru the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) conducted the Elsevier’s Science Direct and Scopus Databases orientation and author writeshop on March 26 at the Centennial Hall, University of Baguio.
The writeshop was attended by 115 participants from the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and other agencies from the Cordillera Administrative Region and Region 1 with the aim of familiarizing the beneficiaries, in which Cordillera Career Development College is a part, on how to use the Elsevier databases in research and development as well as to give information on how to publish completed researches to Elsevier.
Mr. Pio Salvador Ramon Omana, Account Manager, Elsevier Research Solutions, elaborated on Science Direct and Scopus databases which are owned by Elsevier.
According to Omana, Science Direct is the largest online journal in the world with more than 3,800 journals in 24 subject areas which include biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, chemistry, clinical medicine, engineering and veterinary medicine.
“It also combines authoritative, full-text scientific, technical and health publications with smart, intuitive functionality so that users can stay informed in their fields, and can work more effectively and efficiently,” Omana added.
Scopus, on the other hand, is the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed scientific literature. In order to be considered for scopus review, all titles should meet all minimum criteria: peer-reviewed, English abstracts, regular publication, Roman script references and public ethics statement.
Eligible titles are reviewed by the Content Selection and Advisory Board (CSAB) according to a combination of quantitative and qualitative selection criteria such as journal policy, quality of content, journal standing, regularity, and online availability.
Journal policy includes convincing editorial concept/policy, type of peer-review and diversity in geographic distribution of authors.
Quality of content deals with the academic contribution to the field, clarity of abstracts, quality and conformity with stated aims and scope, and readability of articles.
Journal standing refers to the citedness of journal articles in scopus and editor standing.
Regularity is associated with no delay in publication schedule while online availability denotes content availability online, English-language journal home page and quality of home page.
Omana specified guidelines on reading and writing better, clarifying the general structure and contents of the main text to be submitted for possible publication.
“Choose the right journal if you want to make sure that your article gets the attention it deserves,” Omana concluded.
