City officials recently reminded all drug stores in the city to comply with the pertinent provisions of Republic Act (RA) 9994 otherwise known as the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 on the grant of senior discount.
Under Resolution No. 430, series of 2023, local legislators stated that upon presentation of documents or proof of identification as senior citizens during purchase, all establishments should honor the said valid documents for the availment of the prescribed discount or other benefits and privileges to senior citizens.
Further, the council pointed out that the management of all drug stores in the city should conduct the necessary orientation of their employees and personnel to be able to address issues and concerns raised on the grant of the prescribed discount to senior citizens of the city.
RA 9994 grants senior citizens privileges and benefits, including a 20 percent discount on their purchases from all establishments, including drug stores, medical and dental services.
Earlier, many senior citizens in the city complained on the alleged failure of some establishments, including drug stores, to grant them the prescribed discount on their purchases which is in violation of the provisions of RA 9994 and other related laws, rules and regulations governing the mandatory grant of the aforesaid discount to the identified sectors of the society.
The council underscored the need for all establishments, including drug stores, to comply with the mandate of the law to prevent the local government and concerned government agencies to institute the filing of charges against them for them to adhere to the provisions of the law.
