LUNA, Apayao – The Department of Trade and Industry–Apayao (DTI–Apayao) has issued a Price Freeze Bulletin to protect consumers from price manipulation and to make sure the affordability of commodities in the province after the provincial government declared a State of Calamity.
The declaration was made on November 9 through a resolution passed by the Sanggunian Panlalawigan after Typhoon Marce left much destruction and many families affected.
The Price Freeze Bulletin was disseminated in nine major establishments in the municipalities of Luna, Santa Marcela, Pudtol, and Flora. The agency likewise assured that necessary efforts are underway to extend the bulletin’s reach to the upper municipalities – Calanasan, Kabugao, and Conner – in the coming days.
They are also working closely with the local government units and various business establishments for strict compliance and public awareness.
According to the DTI-Apayao Facebook page, this is part of the agency’s commitment “to safeguard consumer welfare and support the community during recovery period.”
Under the Republic Act 7581 or the Price Act, automatic price controls are implemented on basic necessities in areas declared under a State of Calamity to prevent unscrupulous practices such as hoarding or overpricing during emergencies.
Among the products covered in the price freeze are typically food items such as rice, canned goods, and bottled water, as well as non-food items such as fuel, medicine, and hygiene products.
The department will also conduct regular monitoring and inspections throughout the period to make sure the adherence to the price freeze. Establishments found violating the price cap could face penalties, fines, or even closure.
Typhoon Marce left significant damage in Apayao with reports of disrupted livelihoods, damaged infrastructures, and displaced families. The declaration of State of Calamity has enabled the provincial government to mobilize resources, fast-tract aid distribution, and enforce necessary measures like the price freeze.
Consumers are encouraged to report any irregularities or violations of the prize freeze through DTI official hotlines (0928-785-9631/0926-910-2203) or social media page (DTI Apayao). By Jess Christley Marquez
