TABUK CITY, Kalinga – On October 15, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) officially launched Consumer Welfare Month (CWM) 2024 in the DTI Conference Hall. This year’s theme, “Be Smart, Assert Your Consumer Rights,” encourages consumers to understand their rights, make informed decisions, and confidently navigate the marketplace. CWM was established by Presidential Proclamation No. 1098 in 1997, designating October as a time to promote consumer rights and welfare.
The month-long celebration focuses on educating consumers, businesses, and the government on the Eight Basic Consumer Rights, including knowledge of product warranties, return policies, pricing practices, and privacy protection. In today’s busy marketplace, consumers can easily feel overwhelmed by choices and frequent transactions. Understanding basic consumer rights is crucial to ensure fairness and protection.
CWM 2024 encourages people to stay informed about market trends, scams, and to research products and services before making purchases. The event also highlights the importance of being assertive when dealing with businesses and service providers. Clear communication about faulty products or services helps resolve issues and maintains a professional marketplace. Assertive consumers not only improve their own experiences but also contribute to a fairer, more transparent marketplace.
Panelists at the press conference included George Gayumba, Market Supervisor 3, Renie Ramos from the Department of Trade Kalinga, and Dr. Carmen Wanas, City Veterinarian. They responded to inquiries from the media about a range of consumer concerns. The DTI wants to establish a moral marketplace where consumers’ rights are upheld by empowering consumers and encouraging group action. In addition to protecting individual interests, being proactive and knowledgeable improves consumer welfare nationwide. By Jesse Maguiya
