DAGUPAN CITY – Fire extinguishers are essential tools for safeguarding homes, businesses, and vehicles from potentially destructive fires.
To help consumers make informed decisions, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Pangasinan has shared a comprehensive guide on purchasing certified fire extinguishers.
Why certification matters
DTI Pangasinan Provincial Director Natalia Dalaten stressed the importance of choosing certified products that meet stringent safety standards.
“A substandard product could have disastrous consequences, putting lives and property at risk,” she said.
The DTI, through its Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS), enforces mandatory guidelines for fire extinguishers.
“These standards set forth the specification, construction, performance, and labeling requirements, ensuring these vital safety devices—essential for homes, businesses, and vehicles—meet rigorous quality requirements,” Dalaten said.
Dalaten explained that manufacturers and importers of portable fire extinguishers must get a Philippine Standard (PS) License or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC). They also need to have their products tested to meet Philippine National Standards (PNS) at BPS Testing Centers or DTI-approved laboratories.
What consumers should look for
Dalaten shared the following checklist to guide consumers when purchasing fire extinguishers:
- Product Certification Mark: Look for the PS mark and license number or the ICC mark, indicating compliance with safety standards.
- Manufacturer/Refiller Information: Ensure the manufacturer’s or refiller’s name and address are listed.
- Trademark or Brand: Verify the registered trademark or brand name.
- Extinguishing Agent: Confirm the type of extinguishing agent (e.g., dry chemical).
- Capacity and Weight: Check the mass of the extinguishing medium (in kilograms) and the gross weight when fully charged.
- Instructions: Ensure instructions are clear and include reminders like “Recharge After Use.”
- Pressure and Origin: Verify test pressure (MPa), working pressure (kPa), country of manufacture, and production year.
- Serial Number: Ensure the product has a serial number for traceability.
Retailers’ role in ensuring compliance
Dalaten called on retailers to display the PS or ICC license prominently, ensuring transparency and accountability in their establishments.
She also warned manufacturers, distributors, and retailers against the manufacture, distribution, or sale of uncertified fire extinguishers, as violations will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Commitment to consumer protection
Dalaten disclosed that DTI remains steadfast in its mission to protect consumers and ensure the availability of safe and high-quality products.
“By following these guidelines, consumers can help protect themselves and their families from fire hazards,” she added.
