In the past, I have shared some studies proving the importance of developing your communication skills. Today, let me share something personal.
Enhancing my communication skills has been beneficial to me at work.
In 2011, I was hired by a multinational ship management company. I was new and had no idea of the shipping industry. I had the technical accounting skills, but I was not familiar yet with its unique business environment. I had a lot of catching up to do.
Armed with essential communication skills, I navigated and sailed through added challenges – coordinating with different personnel across departments, getting them to one table to discuss plans and programs, and presenting issues and needed resolutions – on top of my technical tasks as an accountant and process improvement analyst. It was challenging and difficult, but it was because of my communication skills that I was able to make it through.
I cannot discount the fact that the continuous honing of my communication and public speaking skills and using them to lead my team and coordinate across departments was a big factor in my job performance.
This enabled me to be promoted twice in that company in a span of three years. In an informal lunch meeting, the CFO mentioned how I adjusted and coped easily despite being new in the company and in the industry.
This was not because of any superpower I had. It was not because of any special talent I had, either. It was because of my drive and openness to continuously receive training in communication and public speaking.
