TABUK CITY, Kalinga – During the April 21 flag-raising ceremony, Mayor Darwin Estrañero urged the city government employees to be cautious and avoid supporting Facebook groups that are causing emotional harm and distress to innocent citizens.
The city mayor issued the warning following reports of a Facebook page with no known administrator that allowed members, many of whom used fake or anonymous identities, to freely post defamatory and threatening comments against individuals.
Mayor Estrañero underlined that Facebook platforms have been used to distribute false information, defamatory accusations, and even death threats.
He also stated that he had personally encountered threats through the platform, which made him very concerned.
The Mayor also stated that the platform is ruining many people’s peace of mind and life, and that it cannot be accepted or supported.
City Councilor Ivann Yannick Bagayao echoed the mayor’s call for action and stressed the importance of responsible social media use.
He warned the public against posting libelous remarks on Facebook and other platforms, reminding them that such actions are violations of the law and may lead to legal consequences.
Bagayao also urged the community to educate others about the dangers and legal repercussions of online libel, in hopes of promoting a more responsible digital environment.
He announced that the city council has already passed a resolution, which was submitted to the Department of Information and Communications Technology, requesting assistance relative to the Facebook page that has been causing emotional harm to the public.
Both officials called on the public who are members of unscrupulous pages to report them to Facebook so that the platform’s administrators and concerned authorities can take appropriate action. By Ian Jefrey Addatu
