BONTOC, Mountain Province – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Mountain Province, through the PDRRM Office, successfully staged the first DRRM Summer Camp for Kids at the Governor Leonard G. Mayaen Sports Complex from July 22-24, 2024.
Forty children aged 10 to 16, participated in the three-day program.
According to the PDRRMO, there is a need to educate children on disaster preparedness as this is crucial in building a more resilient community, considering that Mountain Province, like many regions in the Philippines, is vulnerable to various natural hazards, including earthquakes, typhoons, and landslides.
The camp was conducted in celebration of the National Disaster Resilience Month themed, “Bantayog ng Katatagan at ang Pagbubuklod sa Layuning Kahandaan” (Monument of Strength and Unity for Preparedness).
Governor Bonifacio C. Lacwasan, Jr., represented by Executive Assistant Aqueles P. Agnapan encouraged the children to keep in mind the lessons from the camp’s lectures and activities and to share their newfound knowledge with their families and friends.
The summer camp curriculum included a series of lectures and simulations designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of disaster preparedness. These activities aimed to equip the young participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively to emergencies.
“This initiative (DRRM Summer Camp for Kids) marks a significant step in the province’s efforts to promote disaster preparedness among its youth. By empowering young people with knowledge and skills, the PDRRMC aims to foster a culture of resilience and preparedness within the community,” PDRRMC Chairperson and Governor Bonifacio C. Lacwasan, Jr. said. By Hail, MP
