FLORA, Apayao – The Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD), in collaboration with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), is conducting a three day Actual Waste Analysis Characterization Study (AWACS) from August 29-31, 2024 at Dr. Efren U. De San Jose Sports Complex, Poblacion West, Flora, Apayao.
Around 216 participants including barangay health workers (BHW’s) and barangay kagawad in the municipality actively joined in the AWACS.
Some common categories of waste encountered during the waste analysis characterization study include the following: biodegradable waste: food waste, animal waste, plant material; non-biodegradable waste: plastic, glass, metal; hazardous waste: chemicals, batteries, electronic waste; clinical waste: infectious materials, sharps, pharmaceuticals; and construction and demolition waste: concrete, wood, metal.
Through the AWACS, the municipality can have a better overview of the waste problem. Results of the study are yet to be completed. When done, they can use it as a guide, which is a critical step in developing an effective waste management plan.
The BHWs and barangay kagawad play a crucial role in the provision of healthcare services in the barangay/community. And thus, as part of their responsibilities, they are expected to handle and manage medical waste generated from healthcare facilities and households in their area.
The ENRD said effective waste management is essential to prevent environmental pollution, protect public health, and ensure the safety of healthcare workers. By Michelle Acantilado
