Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales’ campaign ended in a heartbreaker as he became part of an impressive stat streak of Eko Roni Saputra in the closed-door ONE Championship: Inside the Matrix II event on Friday, November 6, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Gonzales tapped out near the end of the first round to Saputra’s via rear-naked choke. It was Saputra’s fourth straight submission victory.
Saputra shot in for a double-leg almost immediately after the bout began, using his chain wrestling to bring matters to the canvas.
Once on the mat, the Indonesian star proved unstoppable as he advanced his position until he took Gonzales’ back and sunk in the choke that forced Gonzales no other choice but to tap.
Gonzales was trying to get back on track as he was on a three-bout winning streak before dropping his last fight against Chinese fighter Getu Hexi in November 2019 by unanimous decision.
He was aware of what his opponent can do and was ready take on one of his toughest opponents to date in wherever the fight style. He was, however, outclassed when the fight got to the ground and could not find an antidote as he could not get the action back on their feet.
“Anyone in this division (flyweight) is a legit contender. It’s a very deep division, one of the deepest in the promotion, and I also want to climb the ladder,” said Gonzales before the fight.
Gonzales’ fight record drops to an even 4-4 after the loss.
On the other hand, Saputra recorded his fourth straight victory, all ended in the opening round after losing his first fight in April, 2019.
