BAGUIO CITY – A 43-year old security guard died after he allegedly accidently shot himself with the use of an improved firearm while on duty in a compound along Paterno Street, South Drive here around 10:30 pm Wednesday.
Police authorities identified the victim as Joven Mat-an Otto, 43, a security guard, who lives in South Sanitary Camp, Baguio City.
Initial police investigation showed the victim arrived in the compound to render duty at around 10 pm Wednesday and immediately proceeded to his post without getting his service firearm from the guard post.
After a few minutes, his fellow security guard who was named as Ramon Polkiso, 39, a resident of Betag, La Trinidad, Benguet, reportedly heard a gunshot emanating from the area where the victim was posted and he subsequently heard from their two-way radio communication gadget that Otto was seeking for assistance.
Polkiso immediately sought the aid of another guard Johnson Fernandez to come to the victim’s rescue and they found out that he was already sprawled bloodied on the basement of the structure he was guarding.
The victim was immediately rushed by his colleagues to the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) for medical treatment but he was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Christine Lucero, the physician on duty, because of a lone fatal gunshot wound on the right side of his chest.
Responding police operatives and elements of the Scene of the Crime Operation (SOCO) team recovered from the crime scene a still undisclosed type of improvised firearm which was reportedly used by the suspect in the perpetration of the crime.
The case is still subject to further investigation by the personnel of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) Station No. 3.
