LENGAYEN, Pangasinan – Pangasinan State University (PSU) President Dexter Buted recently admitted there are ‘loopholes and problems’ in PSU’s On-The-Job Training (OJT) system during the hearing of the ad hoc committee of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) held at the session hall of the Capitol building here.
The SP inquiry tackled a complaint based on a letter of concerned citizens forwarded by Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. to the provincial board which disclosed the travails of some 34 PSU students who were allegedly treated as “regular employees” at the Interphil Laboratories
Agency in Canlubang, Laguna province where they had their OJT as academic requirement for graduation.
The issue on the alleged irregularities of the OJT program of PSU cropped up after a certain Dharel de la Cruz, a graduating BS in Business Administration student of PSU-San Carlos was hospitalized due to a serious respiratory ailment he acquired during his OJT at
the pharmaceutical firm.
SP member Alfonso Bince, Jr. told PSU officials during the SP inquiry that primarily “it is the concern of the provincial government to protect PSU students, most especially that the Espino administration has more than 1,000 provincial scholars enrolled in PSU.”
Atty. Bince added that the SP inquiry is conducted to suggest recommendations for some policy and guidelines to help improve the OJT system of PSU.
The complaint received by the governor stated that the unsuitable environment of the workplace has unfortunately caused Dharel to be hospitalized, as he was not even allowed to go home when he started feeling ill.
It was learned during the SP inquiry that aside from performing office work in Interphil, the OJTs were also exposed to dry products packaging.
