ITOGON, Benguet – Itogon-Suyoc Resources, Inc., a fully-owned subsidiary of Apex Mining, marked Philippine Environment Month and Arbor Day, both in June, with the latter falling on the 10th, by planting a combined total of 800 various seedlings in two tree planting activities.
On 05 June, ISRI and its community partners of barangays Ampucao and Poblacion planted 500 seedlings (395 Benguet pine, 25 avocado, 40 calamansi, 40 guyabano) on a 0.6-hectare enrichment area at Ankober, a part of the company’s tenement hit by a forest fire on 31 January 2023.
On 10 June, ISRI and community partners planted 300 seedlings of sagat (Vitex paviflora) along Tolbing Creek to mark Arbor Day.
The month of June is Philippine Environment Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 237 signed in 1988 by then President Corazon C. Aquino. The month-long celebration is meant to raise environmental consciousness among Filipinos.
Meanwhile, by virtue of Proclamation No. 1149, World Environment Day is marked annually on 05 June (aligned with United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 2994 declaring the same date as World Environment Day) which seeks to encourage countries under the United Nations System to undertake preservation/enhancement of the environment-affirming activities.
