LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The municipalities of La Trinidad and Buguias emerged as champions in their respective categories during the Nateng ay Nataguan Cookfest held on November 27, 2024, at the Benguet Cold Chain Compound in Wangal, La Trinidad. The event was a highlight of this year’s Adivay Festival, showcasing Benguet’s rich culinary heritage and local produce.
Thirteen municipalities participated in the competition, which featured two categories: Professional and Amateur. Both categories required contestants to create gourmet Filipino à la carte dishes using local highland vegetables here in the province of Benguet as the main ingredients. The challenge emphasized vegan or vegetarian recipes, with no animal-derived products, including gelatin, meat, fish, or seafood.
The Professional Category took place in the morning, with the Municipality of La Trinidad taking first place. Kabayan secured second place, while Tuba claimed third. Consolation prizes were awarded to the other participants. Special awards in the Professional Category included Best in Appetizer, which went to the Municipality of Tublay; Best in Main Course, awarded to the Municipality of Kabayan; and Best in Nutri-Drink, which was given to the Municipality of La Trinidad.
In the afternoon, the Amateur Category saw the Municipality of Buguias clinching first place. Bokod earned second place, followed by La Trinidad in third. The Special Awards for the Amateur Category included Best in Appetizer, won by the Municipality of Buguias; Best in Main Course, awarded to the Municipality of Kabayan; Best in Salad, given to the Municipality of La Trinidad; and Best in Nutri-Drink, which went to the Municipality of Tuba.
The participants prepared an appetizer, main course, salad, and a Nutri drink. They had three hours to complete their dishes, with an additional 10 minutes allocated for documenting recipes in the official recipe form after each dish. Cooking equipment and gas were provided by the event.
The Nateng ay Nataguan Cookfest aims to benefit local farmers by promoting the use of highland vegetables. The event underscores the importance of the vegetable industry in Benguet, encouraging creativity and innovation in Filipino cuisine while supporting the province’s agricultural sector.
