LA TRINIDAD, Benguet March 08 – Mayor Romeo K. Saldaappealed to residents to segregate their waste at source as part of the ongoing efforts of the municipal government to significantly reduce the volume of waste being hauled out of the municipality to save on public funds being spent for this endeavor.
He admitted that Cell No. 3 of the town’s Alno controlled dump facility is expected to be filled up by this year, thus, the need for the municipal government to facilitate the opening of Cell No. 2 as a solid waste disposal area while hauling the generated residual waste to the engineered sanitary landfill in Capas, Tarlac.
From the previous 20 to 25 tons of waste being generated by the town’s residents daily, the municipal chief executive disclosed that the volume of generated solid waste suddenly increased to 39 tons daily increasing the volume of residual waste being hauled out of the municipality.
Mayor Salda ordered concerned offices of the municipal government to conduct an investigation on the origin of the solid waste being dumped in the various pick-up points in the municipality to ascertain whether these are coming from outside the capital town and to institute measures to prevent unscrupulous individuals from dumping their waste in the municipality.
He claimed that there have been reports of some people coming from outside the municipality allegedly leaving their garbage in certain pick up points in the boundaries that is why an extensive review of the operating closed circuit television cameras installed in strategic areas is needed to substantiate these reports for the appropriate action of concerned offices.
The mayor explained that the municipal government continuing seeking for funds for the development of the Cell No. 4 of the Alno controlled dump facility the soonest to accommodate the increasing volume of waste generated by the residents.
Salda emphasized that by segregating their waste at source and being actively involved in the composting of waste, residents can contribute in significantly reducing the volume of garbage being hauled out of the municipality and they can produce their organic fertilizer for their crops either for commercial or household consumption.
Bulk of the biodegradable waste being produced in the municipality come from the operating vegetable trading post and other private trading centers in the municipality where farmers are supposed to bring home their vegetable trimmings to avoid contributing in the increasing volume of waste generated in the municipality.
Salda stipulated that the hauling of the town’s residual waste is still one of the available and feasible options to prevent the occurrence of garbage problems in the municipality while efforts are being done by the concerned government agencies to look for the best available solution that can effectively and efficiently address the garbage disposal problem.
