BAGUIO CITY – ‘Alyansa’ sa Baong Pilipinas senatorial bet Panfilo ‘Ping’ Lacson wants that the Philippines will return under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal court (ICC) based in the Netherlands to give hope for the abused hopeless.
The former senator said that the ICC is the global court for the hopeless that is why it is still best for the country to rejoint or be under its jurisdiction to address reported abuses against the hopeless.
However, he proposed that part of the condition that should be imposed by the government is that rejoining the ICC should be subject to the operation of the country’s justice system.
Lacson explained that when the country’s justice system is at work, then whoever will be charged under the DICC should still be litigated in the country but when the same is not working, then it is the time that the accused will be turned over to the ICC for litigation of the cases that will be filed against him or her.
According to him, the coverage of the ICC is defined covering genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, thus, the same is limited which warrants the Philippines to rejoin the ICC to ensure justice for the hopeless.
In 2018, the Philippines withdrew from the Rome statue that concretized the ICC but the said withdrawal took effect one year after the country signified is intention to withdraw.
He claimed that the decision whether or not the Philippines will re-join the ICC still depends on the President but he is proposing to the Palace to consider the same for the protection of those abused hopeless individuals who are victims of abuses of the State forces.
On March 11, 2025, the Philippine government turned over to the ICC former President Rodrigo Duterte who had been charged for alleged crimes against humanity because of his bloody drug war that claimed the lives of more than 30,000 people during his term as the country’s Chief Executive.
