LUNA, Apayao – The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Luna, backed by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) and the Far North Luzon General Hospital and Training Center (FNLGHTC) Blood Bank, pulled off a two-day bloodletting drive that brought in 147 blood bags.
Held at the Rural Health Unit from March 18 to 19, the campaign drew walk-in donors from the barangays, government offices, and uniformed services.
The goal was not about numbers, however. It was about preparedness. Each bag banked is a hedge against emergencies, surgeries, and high-risk births. In a province where terrain complicates transport and access, blood on hand can mean the difference between panic and peace of mind.
Mr. Manny Nicolas of the PHO, who helped oversee the activity, had one word for the turnout: grateful. “We are grateful to all the donors who made this event a success,” he said. “Their generosity not only saves lives but also strengthens the spirit of community.” He also acknowledged the efforts of LGU Luna staff who quietly worked behind the scenes to make things run.
This activity is part of a broader, rolling campaign to normalize blood donation and build a culture where stepping up is second nature. According to the PHO, the goal is not only to meet hospital needs but to embed the habit deep into the community.
Health officials noted that more blood drives will be held in the coming months to support readiness and community involvement. By Michelle Acantilado
