BAGUIO CITY – The project is an organic biotechnology in water treatment that removes algae and cleans the water while removing the odor and turbid color. According to the City Government, the project was initiated by the Greener Property and Leisure Management Service, Inc, the City Environment and Parks Management Office, the Baguio Tourism Office, the Department of Tourism, Maga Tower, and the Baguio Tourism Council.
Further, Supervising Tourism Officer Alec Mapalo emphasized the importance of the water turning blue, and how helpful it is to the lake.
“The blue coloring protects the water so that there will be no more UV rays from the sun going to the algae. So the algae will not have any more nutrients. It’s the algae that cause bad odor, it also causes the dirt, and they’ll have no more nutrients, so it will lessen algae, and therefore, the water starts to become clear.”
The biotechnology does not harm the living organisms in the lake as the fishes itselves feed on the algae, which also help in cleaning the lake. Mapalo also added that the project is one of their efforts in further providing a better environment and quality of life for its constituents.
CEPMO Department Head Atty. Rhenan Diwas, when asked about the maintenance and cleanliness of the lake, believes that doing this initiative is a form of gaining respect from the people of Baguio. Over time, there will be a change in their behavior, their treatment of the lake will be better, and they will continue the work initiated by the government.
The lake was officially revealed last February 14, 2023, at Burnham Park around 10:00 am. SLU band and Glee club members serenaded the guests for the lake’s grand reveal and its Valentine’s special. By Graysheil Frae Runes
