Runners from Metro Manila ruled the 4th edition of Team Malaya’s Rice Terraces Marathon last May 28, 2017 at Hunduan, Ifugao.

According to Team Malaya’s Stephen L. Felices, the event’s race director, the visiting Evelyn Botin, Argie Cabrera, and Gail Madrilejos grabbed three of the four golds at stake during the run to score the dominance of the visitors. Ivan Buyayo of Ifugao shared top honors by grabbing the other gold.

Botin checked in at the 5:56:57 mark to rule the women’s 42K. Her time was good for sixth overall. Tailing her were Socoro Nasugan of Ifugao with a time of 6:22:06, Maria Fe Gonzales (7:04:04) and Angelita Tuble (7:04:05).

Cabrera crossed the tape at the 2:48:53 mark to rule the men’s 21K. Providing stiff competition was veteran Caesar Lyedo from Metro Manila. The 62 year old Leydo arrived around just five minutes later at the 2:54:01 mark. Wilfredo Daoas from Sagada took the bronze with a time of 3:15:08.

Madrilejos checked in third overall, after Cabrera and Leydo, to take home the women’s 21K jewel as her time of 3:09:06 swiped those of runners up Ligaya Rose Ayan of  Hungduan (3:26:15) and Ma. Athena Bulay from Metro Manila (3:39:21)

On the other hand, Buyayo from Ifugao carried the flag for the locals by pocketing the men’s 42k gold. The Team Pinikpikan’s mainstay clocked 4:12:12 to outran Kevin Paul Reblora (4:40:31) and Romando Cumahling (5:05.28)

The participants of this event explored and discovered some of Hungduan, Ifugao’s  scenic places like the Spider web Rice Terraces (UNESCO World Heritage), Hapao Rice Terraces, Waterfalls , Hotspring, Coldspring, SpanishTrail, and Panique rice field.

The marathon served as Leg 2 of Team Malaya’s 2017 Cordillera Series. Team Malaya’s next event is The Last Stand of Yamashita of the Mountain Man Series scheduled on September 3, 2017 at Kiangan, Ifugao. Registration for this event is now open and is offering early bird discount. Interested runners may visit www.facebook.com/teammalaya.org/ or http://teammalaya.org/the-last-stand-of-yamashita-2017/ for details.
