BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways – Baguio City District Engineering Office (DPWH-BCDEO) disclosed most of the on-going rehabilitation and upgrading of man roads within the central business district will be completed and opened to smooth flow of traffic on or before June 15.
Engr. Alexander C. Castañeda, DPWH-BCDEO district engineer, said some of the concreting of roads were already opened to vehicular traffic while some road sections are undergoing the regular curing of concrete and will be ready to be opened on or before June 15, a day before the scheduled multi-agency meeting called by Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan to assess the on-going road projects in the city.
Among the roads that underwent rehabilitation and improvement over the past several months were Fr. Carlo Loop, Bonifacio St., Gen. Luna road, Government Center road, Engineer’s Hill road, Zandueta St., Marcos highway, Leonard Wood Road, Chanum St. and Rimando Road.
“We already issued the appropriate directives to the concerned contractors to make sure that their projects will be completed on time except those that started late in order to contribute in easing the traffic congestions that could occur during the first two weeks of classes,” Castañeda stressed.
Except for Marcos highway, Leonard Wood road and Rimando road that started late, the district engineer assured local residents and city officials that most of the city road projects will be completed on time and will be opened to vehicular traffic on or before June 15.
According to him, the rehabilitation and improvement of Chanum and Zandueta Sts. Will also catch up on the scheduled completion of projects in the central business district as coordination is being done with the city environment and parks management office for them to fastrack the repair of the city’s drainage system so that the concrete pavement would already be put in place.
Castañeda said all the projects in the city’s central business district area could have been completed the earliest possible time if the contractors cooperated with the policies and guidelines that were prescribed for them to do considering that their projects have a great impact to the smooth flow of traffic in the affected roads.
The DPWH-BCDEO official is currently making regular inspections on the on-going road projects within the city’s central business district to make sure that contractors will be strictly adhering to the rules and regulations in order for them to be able to complete their awarded projects on time and ensure convenience among the motoring and commuting public.
In the coming days, the DPWH-BCDEO will start the implementation of retrofitting of portions of the flyover at the BGH rutonda but the same will not cause traffic problems that is why they will await the substantial completion of the works along the approach of the structure before implementing the retrofitting project funded under this year’s budget.
He reiterated the appeal of the agency to the people to temporarily bear the traffic jams caused by the implementation of major infrastructure projects because convenience will surely follow after all works shall have been finished on time.
