BONTOC – The Mountain Province Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC) launched the 2020 Drug Free Song Online Battle of the Bands and Drug Free Song Online Dance Animation during its third quarter meeting on September 23, 2020.
The online competition was initiated by Rev. Fr. Marcial Lloyd C. Castaňeda to sustain the province’s campaign against illegal drugs through social media, music and dance. According to him, the activity aims to animate the young people and to hone their talents and at the same time, to promote the proper use of social media.
“The contests will conscienticize families and communities to become collaborators in upholding a drug-free community. While you enjoy music, you become a part of the good battle against illegal drugs. The battle of the bands is open to all,” Fr. Castaňeda said.
In his message, Gov. Bonifacio C. Lacwasan, Jr. thanked Fr. Castaňeda and the members of the PADAC secretariat headed by Angel B. Baybay for their initiative in organizing the contests amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that his office has been always supportive to the drug-free musical competitions of the PADAC since it was conceptualized in 2017.
“Our creative campaign against illegal drugs is one way of spreading positivity amidst the current pandemic. Our PADAC is steadfast in curbing illegal drugs as evidenced by our province’s past national recognition and awards. As we continue our campaign, I believe that music continues to be of great help in our advocacy,” Lacwasan said.
Meanwhile, as mechanics for the battle of the bands, each group will perform the official drug-free campaign song of the province and make a creative music video to be submitted as an entry. The band must be composed of at least five members for full band performance.
The criteria for judging are the following: mastery of the music piece (25%); harmonization of voices with instruments and arrangement of instruments (25%); voice quality and projection (20%); overall impact that covers the decency of band members and social media impact: likes, shares, reactions and comments (20%); and music video creativity (10%).
For the Drug Free Song Online Dance Competition, the mechanics are each group with a minimum of seven members will perform the dance animation and must be accompanied by the “Drug Free Song,” the official Anti-drug abuse campaign song of Mountain Province. The members of the group may be composed of all males or females or a combination.
The criteria of judging for the dance contest are choreography – creativity, artistry, style and mastery (30%), execution – timing, coordination, projection and expression (30%), costume (15%) and social media impact (25%).

After the board of judges make their decision, there will be an online announcement of winners that will be posted in the official Facebook Page or account. Prizes for the contest come in cash, certificates and PADAC t-shirts. //Erwin S. Batnag
