TABUK CITY, Kalinga– The city government through the Office for the City Agricultural Services (OfCAS) encourages the public to start adapting backyard gardening methods, like growing vegetables in the backyards, to promote and contribute to food security.
This is the statement released by Assistant City Agriculturist Lim Ducyogen following the meeting of members of Rural Improvement Club (RIC) of District I held today in Barangay Balong.
Ducyogen said that RIC members should take the lead in doing this activity in their respective communities being one organization assisted by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
In an interview with RIC coordinator Rey-an Gallamoy, she emphasized that when people grow vegetables in their backyards, they will have access to fresh, clean and cheap food for their families, especially with the high cost of both food and non-food products.
Luckily, all the RIC organizations in the city have established and maintained a communal backyard garden, but, according to Gallamoy, the target of the OfCAS is to encourage all families to adopt the same practice.
By doing this, the OfCAS is giving away free vegetable seedlings, and is teaching members of different organizations to embrace gardening activity and make it sustainable.
Fe Sano, the HVCDP coordinator, attentively addressed each and every question from the RIC members throughout the meeting while teaching them about the production of vegetables, while Aimee Kathleen and Reyna Claire Ancheta discussed organic concoction as additional speakers.
Each RIC group received packs of various vegetable seedlings at the conclusion of the meeting to supplement the produce in their individual communal gardens.
