ITOGON, Benguet – Benguet Caretaker Congressman and Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement and Support (ACT-CIS) Party-list Rep. Eric Go Yap was elated after learning that his proposal of P165 million for the upgrading and rehabilitation of the Wangal Sports Complex has been included as one of the funded projects under the public works department based on the submitted national expenditure program (NEP) of the P4.5 trillion 2021 budget.
Yap, who chairs the House Committee on Appropriations, said that the improvement of the Wangal Sports Complex into a sports facility compliant with national and international standards is one of his priority projects that must be implemented in the province while he is serving as a caretaker.
Congressman Yap claimed that among the initial development projects to be introduced in the Wangal Sports Complex include fiber glass basketball courts, wooden floorings, upgraded bleachers and additional sports facilities to serve as a venue for local, regional, national and international sports competitions and training ground for future athletes.

In his inaugural speech before provincial officials last January 29, 2020 at the Wangal Sports Complex, the lawmaker expressed his desire to further improve the state of the province’s premier sports facility so that the province can independently host sports competitions that will help in promoting Benguet as a premier sports center in the north.
He assured the people of the province he will personally closely monitor the implementation of the proposed rehabilitation and upgrading of the Wangal Sports Complex so that all the programmed projects will be completed in accordance with project specifications and standards.
According to him, Benguet will surely be part of the preferred hosts of different sports competitions in the future once the planned upgrading and rehabilitation of the Wangal Sports Complex will be realized thus efforts are being done to source out funds for the other priority development projects that must be introduced to complete the development of the whole complex.
He assured the people of the province the Wangal Sport Complex will be a different sports arena once all the proposed development projects will be completed and that Benguet will soon be able to bid for the hosting of crowd-drawing sports events and further improve its status, not only as an ecotourism destination, but also as a sports destination, especially that the Cordillera has been the source of famous mixed martial artists who made their names in the international scene over the past several years.
The property where the Wangal Sports Complex is located is owned by the provincial government and had been slowly developed over the past several years with the use of available local funds as one of the potential training venues for athletes coming from the different parts of the province and participating in major sports events hosted by different local governments around the country.
