LUNA, Apayao – The Provincial Department of Health Office (PDOHO) conducted a physical activity event called the “Beat the Heat: Larong Pinoy Challenge” for the learners of Calayucay Elementary School on May 18, 2024 with the school as just one of several beneficiaries. This initiative aims to revive traditional Filipino games and promote a healthy lifestyle among students.
Recognizing the importance of the Department of Health’s (DOH) health promotion playbook, which focuses on diet and physical activity, the Beat the Heat: Larong Pinoy Challenge is an excellent method to encourage physical activity while nurturing cultural awareness.
The event featured traditional Filipino games such as Patintero, Luksong Tinik, Luksong Baka, Step Yes-Step No, Agawan Base, Sack Race, and Tumbang Preso. These activities were designed to make physical exercise enjoyable for students and potentially contribute to developing long-term healthy habits.
PDOHO encouraged students to embrace “Larong Pinoy” as an alternative to electronic games and highlighted the relevance of traditional games in promoting health.
They emphasized that the increasing reliance on devices is affecting students’ academics and over-all development, thus the significance of reintroducing traditional games. By Michelle Acantilado
