BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Education–City Schools Division said that the performance of learners from the different schools in the city in the national achievement test (NAT) and other competencies has been significantly improving over the past several years.
City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Soraya T. Facullo said that in schoolyear 2022-2023, the Baguio division ranked 7th place nationwide in the Grade 12 NAT and building on the said success, schoolyear 2023-2024 saw further improvement with a positive trend in Grade 6 NAT in all subject areas.
She claimed that there was a 12-percent increase from 44.97 percent in 2023 to 57.31 percent in 2024 which means that the learners can perform many tasks independently but still need improvement to fully meet the expectations of this grade level.
Grade 6 learners performed well in English having scored 67 percent, thus, it is important to note that DepEd Baguio is doing well.
However, Facullo admitted that the areas of concern where learners should improve include strengthening instruction in the domain; critical thinking and using evidence to formulate arguments.
“Our interventions in the elementary schools are working. The extra efforts of the schools to provide interventions such as learning materials, both hard copies and digital resources, stakeholder partnerships and data-driven leadership have contributed to the performance,” Facullo stressed.
On the other hand, she admitted that Grade 12 NAT results generally showed improvement as there was a 3.25 percent increase in the Grade 12 NAT results from 46.83 percent in 2023 to 50.09 percent in 2024.
She explained that the above level means that the learners exhibited close to meeting the proficiency standards but they still need improvement to fully meet the expectations of the grade level.
According to her, while the NAT results put Baguio on top in the Cordillera, there is still much to do for senior high school.
Moreover, while there is clear evidence that learners have a good reading foundation in elementary, the next level skill set for high school requires learners to be able to manage and use information which is a competency that all of the stakeholders are of help.
She stipulated that the agency also embraced the Aral program which is a national intervention to address learning loss, particularly in Reading, Math and Science. This program is enshrined under Republic Act (RA) 12028 or the law that established an academic recovery and accessible learning program.
“We rally your support for partners to be tutors on Math, Science and Reading for K-10,” she added. By Dexter A. See
