BAGUIO CITY – To support and showcase the skills of young artists from Baguio and Benguet, a painting competition with the theme, “Panagbenga in the Sky: Urban Blooms” was conducted at the SM Sky Terrace recently.
Ten artists joined the contest and there were three guest artists who participated for exhibition purposes. The participants were tasked to paint something inspired by the scenery from the terrace, hence the theme, Panagbenga in the Sky.
The Pasa-Kalye Group of Artists (PGA), headed by Executive Director Maricar Docyogen, in collaboration with SM City Baguio, organized the event with the aim to give opportunities to young local artists to display their artistic abilities.
“In a city, you might have a lot of creatives there, but you don’t see them because there’s not much opportunity for people to see them… What’s nice about Baguio is that local government and private institutions per se support the creatives,” said Ms. Carmen Jean Villanueva, the secretary of PGA and one of the facilitators of the event.
She added that there are many activities in the city which serve as tools for the creatives of Baguio to showcase their talent and encourage people to try art, especially the children.
Meanwhile, the champion of the painting competition was Ms. Jocelyn Ramos who was inspired by the flowers she saw on the sky terrace.
“Art is a gift sa akin ni Lord (Art is a gift to me from the Lord) … And I want to express my feelings through my art,” Ramos shared.
They were judged by the creativity or originality of the piece, the interpretation, technique and skill demonstration, and presentation and overall impact. By Blessah Joy Manuel
