President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday met with Japanese business leaders to discuss the construction of a new waste-to-energy (WtE) project in Metro Manila that is expected to create 1,000 jobs, marking a significant boost for employment in the country through infrastructure development.
President Marcos together with Presidential Adviser on Investment and Economic Affairs Frederick D. Go and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Cristina A. Roque discussed the USD 560 million project with officials from Kanadevia Corporation and Phil Ecology Systems Corporation (PHILECO).
“We see this project as a strategic convergence of foreign investment, environmental innovation, and inclusive development. It is a testament to the Marcos administration’s whole-of-government approach in delivering transformative solutions that benefit both our economy and our people,” said DTI Secretary Roque.
Further expressing its support to the Bagong Pilipinas’ sustainable efforts, the DTI secretary committed to assess Kanadevia’s eligibility for fiscal and non-fiscal incentives under the CREATE More Law, and other investment-related promotion programs.
Set to rise at the former Smokey Mountain landfill, the project will significantly reduce landfill dependence by as much as 90%, and bolster flood mitigation efforts, directly improving the quality of life for communities in the capital by thermally treating 3,000 metric tons of non-recyclable municipal and industrial waste daily to produce up to 100 MW of clean energy.
At present, Kanadevia, in partnership with Toyo Construction and IHI Construction Service, is undertaking the rehabilitation of the Pasig-Marikina River which is slated for completion by January 2030.
With a global record of 1,575 WtE plants built to date, Kanadevia’s entry into the Philippine market contribute to the country’s national solid waste modernization goals, offering long-term socio-economic advantages through employment and green technology transfer. Adopting a whole-of-government approach, the DTI is committed to facilitate the strategic infrastructure project to achieve the Marcos administration’s goal of building a greener, smarter, and more resilient Bagong Pilipinas.
