TABUK CITY, Kalinga – To enhance road safety and reduce the risk of vehicular accidents, the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO), in collaboration with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, conducted a clean-up operation to remove gravel and concrete debris scattered along the road from barangays Appas and Ipil to Sitio Mapaoay on February 17, 2025.
POSO Assistant Department Head Ernesto Dela Cruz Jr. stated that City Mayor Darwin Estrañero had expressed growing concern over the increasing number of vehicular traffic accidents (VTAs) in the city. In response, the mayor directed the Law Enforcement and Road Safety Division to initiate clean-up drives in accident-prone areas.
According to Dela Cruz, this clean-up operation is a proactive measure aimed at minimizing road hazards and improving overall road safety.
One of the primary causes of VTAs in the area is slippery road conditions resulting from gravel debris falling off trucks transporting construction materials.
This poses a significant risk to motorists, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
Dela Cruz further emphasized that this is not the first time their office has conducted such an operation, and they plan to expand the initiative to other roads affected by similar issues.
In addition to the clean-up efforts, POSO is conducting simultaneous inspections of trucks hauling gravel and other materials.
These checkpoints ensure compliance with city ordinances requiring the use of canvas covers and adherence to load limits to prevent overloading.
The POSO urges all motorists to exercise caution while driving and follow safety protocols to protect themselves and others on the road.
Authorities reaffirm their commitment to maintaining road safety and encourage cooperation from drivers, trucking companies, and construction firms to help prevent further accidents. By Edward Joseph Gacuya
