BAGUIO CITY – City officials recently requested the City Engineering Office (CEO) to facilitate the establishment of a senior citizens center for barangay Camp 7 Senior Citizens Association on the vacant lot located below the Camp 7 Elementary School.
Under Resolution No. 630, series of 2024, local legislators stated that gone are the days when senior citizen’s centers were viewed as merely a meeting ground for the older population as the facilities are seen as a vital part of every community.
Further, these facilities provide seniors with things they might need in one central location and as such, they offer the older population the information, assistance and social interaction needed to lead healthy, happy and thriving lives.
During the Senior Citizens Officials for A Day (SCOFAD) session held on October 14, 2024, the SCOFAD Council adopted the proposal of SCOFAD Vice Mayor Lureto D. Alinao that requested the City Mayor to facilitate the establishment of a senior citizens’ center for barangay Camp 7 Senior Citizens Association on the vacant lot below Camp 7 Elementary School.
The council claimed that senior citizen’s centers are a vital part of every community as they serve a vulnerable population and help achieve a good quality of life for the older adult community.
Moreover, the body added that studies have shown that senior citizens’ center participants have higher levels of health, social interaction and overall life satisfaction compared to their peers who are not participants in senior citizens’ centers.
The council pointed out that another vital aspect of having a senior citizens’ center is the sense of community it offers to each participant and as the seniors grow older, they find it more difficult to find companions within their age category.
It explained that senior citizens’ centers provide a place to gather and where different social activities can be conducted that allow seniors to network with the local senior community.
The council emphasized that senior citizens’ centers also offer programs that teach their participants how to manage and delay the onset of chronic diseases, a major worry for older adults and their loved ones.
Copies of the approved resolution will be transmitted to the CEO for information, guidance, ready reference and further needed action. By Dexter A. See
