PUDTOL, Apayao – Apayao Lone District Representative Cong. Eleanor C. Bulut-Begtang stressed the need for more hands-on disaster preparedness during the Rescuelympics held at Lower Maton, Pudtol on February 12.
The Congresswoman highlighted the province’s vulnerability to floods and food shortages, calling for stronger preventive measures alongside rescue operations.
She likewise commended the provincial and municipal disaster risk reduction and management offices (DRRMOs) for their commitment to disaster readiness. However, she urged a shift from reactive responses to proactive strategies, such as ensuring equipment availability, and mandating life vests on boats.
“Nagaget tayo nga ag-rescue ngem nu dadduma awan gamit tayo. Masapul nga adda kuma amin dagituy nga mangprotektar kadagiti bagbagi da sakbay da nga sumabak iti disaster,” she emphasized.
She assured that the provincial government will continue to support disaster preparedness efforts by providing training and equipment. Stressing the importance of food stockpiles at both the family and barangay levels, she urged communities to prioritize food security.
“Kitaen yu nga adda iti barangay yu nu kasanu nga adda ti kanen tayo ken amin nga basic necessities nu adda ti disaster. Dapat prepared tayo nga kanayon ta saan tayo ammo nu kaano iti disaster.” she reminded local leaders.
Bulut-Begtang also called on barangay officials to ensure household-level preparedness, emphasizing that family readiness is a shared responsibility.
“Dapat amin nga pamilya adda iti go bag nan nga adda iti karga na food, water, medicines, ken naduma pay nga importante nga gamit,” she added.
As part of her advocacy, Bulut-Begtang introduced her own twist on the trending “2-2-4” concept and adapted it to disaster preparedness.
