BONTOC, Mountain Province – The Riverside zone, comprising Barangays Tocucan, Talubin, Can-eo, and Bayyo, emerged victorious in the Barangay Disaster Resilience Quiz Bee hosted by the Bontoc Local Government Unit (LGU) through its Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) on July 30, 2024.
The participants were divided into four teams: Riverside Zone (Tocucan, Talubin, Can-eo, Bayyo), Upland Zone (Mainit, Guina-ang, Maligcong, Dalican), ALBAGO Zone (Alab Oriente, Alab Proper, Balili, Gonogon), and Central Zone (Bontoc Ili, Poblacion, Samoki, Caluttit).
The Riverside Zone scored 38 points, securing the championship and setting them to receive a cash prize of ₱7,000.00. Meanwhile, the ALBAGO Zone came in second with 35 points and will receive ₱6,000.00. Furthermore, Upland Zone took third place with 30 points and will be awarded ₱5,000.00. Finally, Central Zone finished fourth with 28 points and will receive ₱4,000.00.
In addition to the main awards, the MDRRMO presented first aid kits, vitamins, and emergency whistles to the winners of the special awards.
In his address, Bontoc Mayor Jerome “Chagsen” Tudlong, Jr., commended the participants for their dedication and emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness.
“This quiz bee is more than just a competition; it is a testament to our collective effort to build a resilient and prepared community. Each participant has shown remarkable dedication and knowledge, which is crucial for effective disaster risk reduction and management,” he added.
The quiz bee centered on Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and the Incident Command System.
Further, a brief review on Republic Act 10121 specifically on the four thematic areas of DRRM was facilitated by LDRRMO II Meilynne Shalom Ayan while a brief Information, Education, and Communication Campaign on Fire Safety was presented by FO3 Evona Faith Patingan-Chinalpan of the Bontoc Municipal Fire Station (MFS).
This activity is a highlight of the 36th National Disaster Resilience Month celebration and served as a refresher on the topics covered during the Incident Command System Executive Course (ICSEC) held in March 2024, attended by barangay officials and functionaries. By Christy Mae C. Pangesfan
