LUNA, Apayao – Second Lieutenant Philip Jhonard D. Peneyra, a 24-year-old native of Sipa, Santa Marcela, has made history as the first graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) from the town.
He joined the ranks of the PMA ‘Bagong Sinag’ Class of 2024, completing his journey on May 18, 2024, at PMA, Fort del Pilar in Baguio City.
The newly minted Navy Ensign is the youngest child of Jhonard Peneyra, a farmer, and Jovielyn D. Peneyra, an overseas worker. 2LT Peneyra began his educational journey at Sipa, Santa Marcela before graduating from St. Paul University Philippines (Tuguegarao) for his Senior High School (SHS) education.
The PMA’s graduation ceremony this year saw 278 cadets, including 224 males and 54 females. These newly commissioned military officers from the nation’s foremost military academy are set to serve across the three branches of the Armed Forces of the Philippines: The Philippine Army (PA), Philippine Air Force (PAF), and Philippine Navy (PN).
The ‘Bagong Sinag’ Class of 2024, which stands for ‘Bagong Henerasyong Gagampanan ang Tama: Serbisyo, Integridad at Nasyonalismo ang Aming Gabay,’ symbolizes a new ray of hope for the Armed Forces, showcasing their commitment to uphold the welfare and sovereignty of the Filipino nation.
Dubbed the ‘COVID Cadets,’ this class overcame several challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing staunch grit and resilience. Their dedication saw them through rigorous training and academic demands, leading to a well-deserved graduation.
In an interview, 2LT Peneyra shared important advice for aspiring yApayaos planning to join the PMA. “Transitioning from the rugged mountains of Apayao to the prestigious halls of the PMA requires determination, courage, and resilience. These qualities will pave your path toward a future of dedicated service and effective leadership. Remember, you possess the ability to shape a brighter tomorrow. Embrace the challenges ahead and pursue your dreams with determination,” he stated.
