The Schools Division Office (SDO) of Ifugao of the Department of Education (DepEd) conducted its 1st Division Math Encampment Program held in the Lagawe open gym on May 29-30, 2025.
The program aims to upskill teachers with activities and interventions in mathematics and engage learners in physical exploration, mathematical investigation, and problem-solving in real-world contexts, creatively blending outdoor adventures, online games, and hands-on activities for their students.
Participated in by 33 teachers and 99 students coming from the 11 school districts of Ifugao. Each district was represented by three teachers and nine Grade 5 or Grade 6 students, making the population a total of 132 participants.
According to Margarette Dulnoan, Education Program Supervisor and activity manager, the activities discussed on how they can motivate their learners to love math and how learners could learn math through games; that it is not necessary to be inside the classroom.
Math can be transformed from either a boring or highly numerical subject to an engaging one.
“The learners can find fun and enjoyment in the math subject delivered more understandably and interactively, because they can easily learn by doing,” Dulnoan underscored.
The activity includes board games, like digit detectives; interactive math, like mental health relay games and math challenges; discussion of gamification techniques in math, like try-out mystery box, and Math Meets Art: Exploring Shapes Through Paper Folding.
Since this is the first-ever Division Math Encampment, Dulnoan had high hopes that they will continue conducting this kind of activity in the following years, since many teachers want to join this program and expect a larger number of participants for next year.// Veronica Batan, BSU-DevCom Intern
