BAGUIO CITY – Kapihan sa Baguio on Health Media Conference gathered at the Department of Health Cordillera Administrative Region (DOH-CAR) on March 3, 2025, to discuss multiple topics. One of the discussed subjects was Rabies Awareness Month.
March dedicates itself to raising awareness about Rabies. As panelist Dr. Vladi Natasha Q. Cruz discussed, rabies is a viral zoonotic disease caused by unvaccinated animals such as cats, dogs, bats, and more. Worldwide, 150 countries have been affected by this disease, including the Philippines. Despite this number, Dr. Cruz stated that “the Philippines hopes to be rabies-free by 2030.” She advised the audience to get the vaccine for the disease if they were ever bitten, scratched, or came in close contact with the unvaccinated. If not treated, it can be fatal and can result in death, but it is preventable with the vaccine.
The discussion at the Kapihan sa Baguio on Health Media Conference highlighted the importance of prevention, early treatment, and responsible pet ownership in the fight against rabies. With continued awareness, vaccination efforts, and community cooperation, the goal of a rabies-free Philippines by 2030 remains within reach. By Meann Henderson
