ITOGON, Benguet – In celebration of National Rice Awareness Month and Organic Agriculture Month, the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera in coordination with the Itogon Municipal Agriculture’s Office, organized an educational tour for students from Grades 7 to 10 of the Baguio International Academy on November 20, 2024. The event, held in Tinongdan, Itogon, Benguet, allowed students to gain firsthand experience of sustainable farming practices, highlighting the importance of rice farming and organic agricultural systems.
The tour featured a series of hands-on activities, including rice harvesting, winnowing, and pounding which offered the students a detailed insight into the traditional rice production process. Additionally, the participants engaged in planting petchay (Chinese cabbage), feeding livestock, and learning about the principles and operations of organic farming.
These activities were designed not only to highlight the significance of rice as a staple food and economic driver but also to emphasize the environmental benefits of organic farming practices. The students were able to interact directly with farm owners who shared their personal experiences and the challenges they face in maintaining sustainable agricultural operations.
Jon Keira B. Padernal, one of the student participants, reflected on the experience, stating, “This was my first visit to a farm, and I gained a thoughtful respect for the hard work involved in farming. I had no idea how physically demanding it is, especially the traditional methods used to process rice, such as pounding it with large stones. It made me realize how much effort goes into producing the food we often take for granted, and how important it is to support local farmers and sustainable practices.”
Before proceeding to the farms, the students received an orientation on the programs and activities of the Department of Agriculture, which was presented by Precil M. Sales, the Organic Agriculture Program Focal Person. Sales provided an overview of the agency’s initiatives to promote organic farming and sustainable agriculture.
Meanwhile, Leny D. Mendoza, further underscored the importance of rice in the Filipino diet and its role in the national economy. She also discussed the vital need for responsible consumption and the promotion of organic farming practices as essential components of a sustainable future.
The field tour was also lauded by the teachers. Wilner Pe, one of the teachers from Baguio International Academy, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, noting, “The academic tour was an eye-opening experience for our students. It was evident from their expressions that they were both amazed and deeply engaged. I trust that this experience will have a lasting impact on how they view agriculture and its importance in society.”
The agency remains committed to enhancing awareness of sustainable farming practices and the integral role that local farmers play in ensuring food security and environmental sustainability. This educational tour is also part of a broader effort to engage the youth in understanding the importance of agriculture and to encourage their support for local and organic food systems. By Leny D.
