The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Brookspoint barangay has showcased its projects benefiting the youth in the barangay.
The barangay youth council headed by Van Sanchez, who also serves as vice president of the SK Federation of Baguio announced the pilot conduct of the “Summer Story Class 2022,” a six-day activity-filled session for children 4-8 years old and the opening of the youth center-cum-reading corner for the barangay youth.
Sanchez said 32 children will join the story class starting on July 8 and every Friday until Aug. 19. Activities include story-telling, arts and crafts, writing skill, reading comprehension, music/dance, personality development and kids’ tour.
The sessions will be facilitated by artist/designer Harold Banario, foreign volunteer Omar Abdulrab, city librarian Easter Pablo, ESL teacher Eprinciel Saysayan, National Youth Commission Regional Head for Region 1 and Cordillera Administrative Region Dr. Sheridan Athena Gajete.
The children will receive free t-shirt uniform, kids’ bag, school supplies and snacks to boot.
Sanchez said the project was conceived with the aim of helping young children adjust to the return of face-to-face classes both mentally and emotionally.
“The project will give our adings an opportunity to have fun while helping them grow both intellectually and emotionally while on school break at the same time, it will also give us older ones the chance to share our time and talents by participating in a worthwhile and beneficial activity,” Sanchez said.
The youth center and reading corner meanwhile opened last June 9 with the aim of catering to the need for learning and safe space of the youth in the barangay.
Sanchez said the organization used to hold free one-on-one tutoring sessions for children in the barangays to help them cope with their academic requirements but the project was shelved during the pandemic. The new projects serve as extensions of these learning endeavors.
The barangay SK also sustains projects for the older age groups like the regular talk show tackling issues affecting their sector, anti-drug educational drives, environmental awareness activities through backyard gardening and terrarium-making, among others.
Sanchez said their projects are part of the organization’s thrust to help the youth to focus on education and to reach their full potential as leaders and contributors to nation-building.
