The Vitagreen RIC of Laya West, a nominee for the prestigious Gawad Saka award under the Outstanding Rural Improvement Club (RIC) category, recently underwent a National Evaluation.
The evaluation, which took place on April 1 at Laya West Elementary School, is an essential component of the selection process for the 2025 Gawad Saka.
The annual initiative, organized by the Department of Agriculture (DA), aims to honor exceptional individuals and organizations in agriculture and fisheries.
The evaluation team consisted of representatives from various agencies, including the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF), and Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (AMAS).
The team conducted an ocular inspection of the garden and other livelihood activities managed by the Vitagreen RIC in their community.
During the validation, the RIC members presented their programs and activities, detailing how they sustain these initiatives for the benefit of the community.
They also shared their best practices and efforts in agriculture, which have contributed to the socio-economic development of the region.
The organization is a non-profit, grassroots organization that empowers rural women through community-driven projects aimed at improving family living and advancing local agricultural practices.
Director Gina Nilo from BSWM led the evaluation and underscored the critical role of RIC members in supporting the agricultural sector and promoting sustainable programs within their communities.
She emphasized the importance of empowering local women to inspire and lead others toward positive change.
Also supporting the evaluation were City Agriculturist Lim Docyugen, Research Specialist Sandra Uyam and represented the legislative department, including VLAP Kalinga Chapter President Josefa Baliwag and RIC Coordinator Rhey-an Gallamoy. Other staff from the OFCAS, Kalinga Provincial Agriculture Office, and the DA CAR Regional Office were also present to witness the validation process. By Ian Addatu
