TAYUM, Abra – The mayoralty candidate of a political party in this municipality and her supporters were unhurt after they were allegedly ambushed by still unidentified armed men on board a vehicle that was reportedly used in previous political harassment incidents provincewide along the road leading to the municipality late Monday afternoon.
Fortunately, none of the passengers on the vehicles belonging to the convoy were hurt in the said shooting incident but the vehicle where mayoralty candidate Lia Cariño Alcantara sustained multiple bullet marks in different portions, including the windshield.
It was theorized that a black Ford Ranger that was issued in several political harassment incidents in the province was one of the vehicles used by the gunmen in the said afternoon ambush.
Some political quarters in the province branded that the latest ambush of the town’s mayoralty candidate is a cowardly act of violence that only shows their growing desperation.
Concerned politicians in the province called on the people to rally together to protect the democratic values and ensure that every candidate, regardless of their views can campaign freely and securely in the different places in Abra.
Further, the Abrenians were told to show their commitment to a new Abra, a province where they can live in a just and safe society, where political differences are resolved at the ballot boxes and not in the shadows of ambush. HENT
