LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The ongoing rehabilitation and upgrading of the Wangal Sports Complex will be completed probably by the end of the year or by the first quarter of next year depending on the performance of the contractor commissioned by the public works department to implement the said multi-million project.
Benguet Caretaker Congressman and Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement and Support (ACT-CIS) Party-list Rep. Eric Yap stated that once completed, the province will have the chance to host prestigious local, regional, national and even international sports competitions with an upgraded sports facilities compliant with existing competition standards.
Earlier, the lawmaker earmarked some P165 million for the improvement of the track oval, aside from the placement of the required tartan track, while another P25 million was allocated under this year’s budget of the public works department for the improvement of the covered court to conform to prescribed competition standards in the conduct of indoor games.
The lawmaker added that ongoing works by the contractor include the compaction of the ground before the installation of the rubberized track oval in conformity with existing standards.
According to him, the Benguet Congressional District Office will help closely monitor the implementation of the project to ensure quality workmanship to interest organizers of sports events to hold their competitions in the province and boost the inclusion of Benguet as a host of sports competitions.
Congressman Yap explained that the ongoing rehabilitation and upgrading of the Wangal Exports Complex is just the initial wave of development works in the province’s premier sports facility with future works to include an Olympic-sized swimming pool and other facilities that will allow the conduct of more sports events in the said complex.
In his inaugural speech as the province’s legislative caretaker in a welcome program last January 29, 2020, Yap announced that one of his priority development projects will be the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Wangal Sports Complex to allow the same to conform with prescribed standards of sports competitions that will make the province a regular host to sports events.
Initially, the provincial government had been providing staggered limited funds for projects in the Wangal Sports Complex that went into the initial put up of the covered court and the track oval that allowed the province to host previous local and regional sports competitions in Benguet over the past several years such as the district meet, the provincial sports competitions and the regional athletic competitions.
