TABUK CITY, Kalinga – Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte touted the bodong as a peace-making system, calling it a “phenomenal example for others who seek to establish a democratic community despite ethnic diversity and differences”.
The Vice President visited Kalinga for the first time on February 13 to grace the celebration of the 28th Kalinga Founding Anniversary as guest of honor and speaker in the schools day program.
Speaking to an audience of mostly teaching and non-teaching personnel of the school districts and tertiary schools of Kalinga, the official said the unique practice of the bodong system makes the Kalingas “perfect role models for our plan to integrate peace and education into our basic education curriculum to teach Filipino children and youth how to resolve conflicts peacefully without resulting to violence”.
She said the Bodong Festival “is a convergence of time and embraces the humble years of independence, paying homage from the depth of your hearts to the leaders before you who through their sacrifices and tireless fight against cultural and environmental aggressions ensure the safety of your province and maintain the charm it possess.”
During the program, she was adopted as daughter of Kalinga and given the name ‘Lumingay’ which means “lovable, strong, supportive wife of a tribal leader” by virtue of Sangguniang Panlalawigan resolution no. 2023-034. She was dressed in ‘tapis’ and given ‘bongor’ necklaces as part of the adoption rites.
“As a visitor and now an adopted daughter, I am filled with enormous awe at seeing the beauty of Kalinga. It is my first time here in Kalinga. It feels like I am in Davao because in Davao, we hold eleven different indigenous people’s tribes as well. It is mystifying and I am certain the people who came here and have returned again and again can attest to the comforting vibe of the place and the resonance it brings to those who find refuge in a landscape that remains resplendent and never quiet with its cultural stories. It is a true wonder of our country,” the Vice President said.
“I am proud of the uniqueness of your province and more so of the strength of its people to serve it and the loyalty of your leaders who affirm your collective aspirations,” she added.
