LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Benguet Caretaker Congressman and Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement and Support (ACT-CIS) Party-list Rep. Eric Go Yap proposed to the public works department the allocation of some P190 million for the upgrading of the facilities of the Wangal Sports Complex to allow the province to be able to host the conduct of prestigious regional, national and international sports competitions that will eventually place Benguet in the map of prospective sports venues in the future.

Speaking before municipal and barangay officials of this capital town headed by Mayor Romeo K. Salda, Vice Mayor Roderick Awingan and Liga ng mga Barangay president Charles Canuto during the turnover of cash assistance to the identified beneficiaries of the labor department’s Tulong Panghanapbuhay Sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) Program, Yap, who chairs the powerful House Committee on Appropriations, pointed out that Benguet can host future regional and national sports competitions such as the Palarong Pambansa once the proposed upgrading of the sports facilities in the province’s Wangal Sports Complex will be completed once the funds that have been requested will be allocated by the agency.

He added that of the funds being requested, P25 million will be earmarked for the putting in place of a state-of-the-art basketball court in the closed gymnasium aside from constructing the needed bleachers and improving the lighting fixtures in the said facility.

Further, Congressman Yap disclosed that some P165 million will be allocated for the construction of a world-class stadium around the complex apart from the improvement of the rubberized track oval that will conform with international standards to boost the province’s chances of hosting more accredited sports competitions in the future.

However, he claimed that for the construction of the proposed olympic-sized swimming pool within the sports complex, the funds for the project will be included in the government’s annual budget for 2022 to ensure the realization of Benguet’s aspiration to have a well-developed sports complex.

According to him, the availability of adequate sports facilities in the province will also entice aspiring athletes to hone their talents and excel in their desired sports discipline to be able to get the needed slots in the different National Sports Associations (NSAs) to represent not only the province but also the country in various sports competition inside and outside the country.

During the welcome program that was accorded to the Benguet caretaker congressman at the Wangal Sport Complex last January 29, 2020, he immediately noticed the need to further develop the province’s sports facility by providing the appropriate facilities to allow the province to be one of the potential hosts of future regional, national and international sports competitions.

Yap stated that he will not allow that the Wangal Sports Complex will not be fully developed during his term as the province’s legislative caretaker because he will personally monitor the developments of the conduct of the processes that will lead to the implementation of the project so that there will be no unnecessary delays in the completion of the same for the benefit of sports enthusiasts inside and outside Benguet.
