LUNA, Apayao – Flora’s pride Mhage Sebastian cemented her name in the annals of collegiate chess history as she led Far Eastern University (FEU) in its second consecutive University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Women’s Chess Championship while bagging the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in a stellar Season 87 campaign.
Playing on the top board, Sebastian clinched the much-coveted MVP award alongside the Board 1 gold medal, becoming the cornerstone of the Lady Tamaraws’ dominance with her tactical brilliance leading FEU to another championship run.
A year after claiming the Rookie of the Year honors and finishing as the MVP runner-up, she proved she is no flash in the pan. The 19-year-old prodigy from Flora took her game to the next level and backed FEU’s title defense.
“I did not expect that I will be able to clinch the MVP trophy because I had setbacks during the tournament. Yes, I did hope before it started but I got discouraged when I suffered a loss. I told myself that I will do my best for the team and hope for individual medal but God’s plan is way better and I am beyond grateful,” said Sebastian in a lengthy Facebook post.
With Sebastian, FEU’s back-to-back triumph showcased exceptional preparation and depth, building on last year’s success. Her MVP honor capped a season of individual and team accolades, as the Lady Tamaraws established themselves as the team to beat.
“All I can say is that it was really all God’s favor. One thing I learned from this season is when you have setbacks, learn to conquer them. The process is just as important as the outcome, and we shall learn to cherish it,” she added.
With two seasons already filled with milestones, Sebastian’s journey is far from over. She eyes more victories for her team and in individual competitions as she carries with her the hopes of her fellow yApayaos and the banner of her alma mater.
For now, the chessboard belongs to Mhage – UAAP Champion, MVP, and an inspiration to all. By Jess Christley Marquez
