BAGUIO CITY – Teams starts to heat up at the end of round one of the eliminations of the YMCA Inter-School Basketball tilt as the YMCA Basketball club posted its second win in the series against the Star College HS Dev’t team B suffered its second lost, posting a 55-40 win on game four last Saturday.
Following game strategies, Star College HS stood firm in the first canto of play trailing by five and inch their way to defray the deficit by three points 23-20 at the end of the second canto. Pressuring the Y’Basketeers on the early minutes of the third canto also provided the Star HS a chance to draw the YMCA Basketeers lead to a single point 25-24 at the end of the third canto of play.
Employing a full court press defense at the early minutes of the fourth canto however worked for the YMCA Basketeers as turnovers from double teaming to trap defense efforts gave them the chance to make basket conversions to pile up points that limited the Star HS to only six points in the fourth canto to win at the end of the buzzer by fifteen big points 55-40.
Mean while, the BCSF Apollo varsity A after losing their first game in the eliminations came back with an exciting game versus the SLSC Varsity A team, posting an early lead to end the first canto of play 18-9. SLSC Varsity A Team however, gave the Apollos’ a taste of their own medicine at the start of the second canto of play when they posted an 18-8 run over the Apollos’ also giving them the lead at the end of the second half of play 25-27.
Getting the most out of a taller squad Apollo Head Coach Dan Aquino made adjustments in their line of defense that got the SLSC squad into foul travel giving the opportunity for the Apollos’ to take control of the boards and take the front seat back at the end of the third canto of play 46-45.
The SLSC Squad however came back strong on the fourth canto taking the lead at half time of the fourth canto 58-57 on a running game, however, forced by their handicap of fouls, the Apollos’ converted crucial free throws on the fifteen to subdue SLSC’s running game to win at end time 71-67.
